Gouged Spheres
2024 · Ceramics
These pieces came from initial sketches exploring simple and elegant shapes. Once I settled on the sphere as my subject, using two inflatable balls of different dimensions, I was able to set slabs to half of the balls, let them harden, and remove while taking into account draft angles.
Once I had set one hardened half over the other and sealed them together, the addition of a hand-ripped hole made for an interesting contrast against the graceful spherical shape. Hand-painted brush stroked where added when glazing to further enhance that imperfect but perfect aesthetic.
